Clinical Medicine

The Diploma in Clinical Medical Sciences General for COG is an affiliated programme of the University of Zambia, School of Medicine (UNZA SOM). The Diploma in Clinical Medical Sciences General is a clinical skill and community-based training programme aiming to produce graduates capable of providing basic essential medical care and management at the primary health care level. The COG programme is a three-year programme focusing on common health problems.

The programme prepares graduates to bring medical care as close to the family as possible by providing primary health care services to a cross-section of the Zambian population. On completion of the programme, graduates are awarded a Diploma in Clinical Medical Sciences in General. In addition, the graduates are registered with the Health Professions Council of Zambia (HPCZ) as COGs.

The COG programme is structured to allow the infusion of theory and practical training activities for students. The practical sessions are at the end of the first semester of year one, the second semester of year one and the second semester of year two. Students undertake these practical attachments at appropriate health facilities.

The final year of study involves clinical attachment in various speciality fields of clinical practice, including clerkships in internal medicine, surgery, obstetrics and gynaecology, paediatrics, and child health. In addition, there are rotations in other speciality areas that include: ophthalmology, ENT, psychiatry, dermatology and dentistry.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

The minimum entry requirements for school leavers into this programme shall be:

 Five (5) ‘0’ levels at credit level or better of the Zambian General Certificate of Education or its equivalent as follows:

  • Four (4) ‘0’ level compulsory subjects in
  • English language
  • Mathematics
  • Science
  • Biology or Agricultural Science
  • Any other (1) subjects
  • The minimum entry age shall be 16 years
  • All candidates should pass both personal interviews and written tests.
The minimum entry requirements for school leavers into this programme shall be:

Five (5) ‘0’ levels at credit level or better of the Zambian General Certificate of Education or its equivalent as follows:

  • Four (4) ‘0’ level compulsory subjects in
  • English language
  • Mathematics
  • Science
  • Biology or Agricultural Science
  • Any other (1) Subject
  • Minimum of two (2) years of working experience.
  • All candidates should pass both personal interviews and written tests.

 

Registered Nursing

Lusaka Institute of Applied Sciences offers three(3) year diploma programmes for Registered Nursing (RN). This diploma course is under the School of Medicine and Health Sciences. This course is accredited by the General Nursing Council of Zambia (GNCZ)

AIM

To train a nurse who will be self-directed, analytical, knowledgeable, skilful and responsive to changing health needs and emerging diseases and contribute towards improving the quality of care provided to “individuals, families and communities in Zambia”.

PROGRAMME OBJECTIVES

  1. Assess the health needs of individuals, families, groups, and communities using various nursing models in line with available technology.
  2. Apply knowledge from behavioural and biomedical sciences in managing patients and clients in various healthcare settings.
  3. Demonstrate understanding of the research process by initiating and conducting operational research on identified health priorities.
  4. Demonstrate management and leadership skills and work in their multi-disciplinary and team approach.
  5. Work in partnership with individuals, families, groups and communities in assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating health care.
  6. Recognize and accept the needs for self-direction, professional awareness and continued professional growth.
  7.  Apply various innovative methods of learning and education in order to be self-directed in addressing different healthcare issues.
  8. Apply knowledge of information technology in their nursing practice.
  9. Serve as a role model and mentor in the nursing profession and community.
  10. Be proactive and assertive in their learning process and nursing practice.
